Hi! My name is Loni Habersetzer. I live and fly privately in Washington State, and for six months of the year, I fly commercially for a guide service in Alaska. With over 7,000 hours in Supercubs, and over 16,000 off-airport takeoffs and landings logged, I have made the off-airport environment my specialty.

Let me share with you what I have learned, and help make your off-airport adventures safer and more successful. Whether you're just getting started and would like to learn the basics, operate commercially, or already an expert just looking to enhance your proficiency and land in challenging new places, CUBDRIVER 749ER offers training for every skill level.

When I heard Loni was offering bush pilot training, I was first in line. You don't have to watch Loni operate in the rough stuff very long to appreciate the skill and technique he's developed in those 16,000 landings.

First, as a basis to judge my perspective, here's who I am. I'm a relative newbie to flying, with just 500 hours since 2001. I started flying a Supercub in 2004, and have flown it about 100 hours. Up until the time I took the course, I was struggling to duplicate what I thought I saw Loni doing. Loni changed all that in an amazingly short time. He has a technique and it works! But knowing the technique is key to being able to practice the right moves.

In three days, my ability to handle the rough stuff improved 100%. The course is flexibly structured and in an area that can accommodate a variety of skill levels. I learned two key lessons from Loni:

  1. How to hit the spot, despite the obstacles.
  2. How to plant your wheels at touchdown, and keep them there so you can brake. This technique alone made the three days well worth it!

Loni's approach to teaching is not your typical CFI Flight training. So how does he do it?

  1. He tells you. Loni is thoughtful and articulate in describing how it's done.
  2. He shows you. You ride with Loni through several approaches and landings to see exactly what it looks like from the cockpit, and what he's doing with the controls.
  3. Then You Fly. He watches and critiques. He's good at spotting the problems and offering helpful hints to correct whatever you're doing wrong.

This combination works great! Consistency doesn't come in 3 days, but you have a much better understanding of what you are trying to accomplish when you do venture out on your own to practice, practice, practice.
